Jerry Decker, age 75, of Huron, SD, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.

His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 19, at Mt. Olivet Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation with family present will be Friday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jerry Decker, son of Abe and Katie (Waldner) Decker, was born on February 29, 1936, on a farm near Doland, SD. He attended country school through the 8th grade at Valley #1 School, northeast of Huron. In 1945, the family moved to a farm near Huron. Jerry graduated from Huron High School in 1955.

Jerry entered the U.S. Army on July 16, 1956. He served his basic training in Arkansas; further serving in Virginia; Ft. Bliss in Texas; and 20 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged on July 10, 1959.

From 1959-63, he hauled hay for Butch Hofer, worked for Iky Wipf driving truck for road construction, and Andy Hofer custom combining in the southern states.

On April 20, 1963, Jerry married Myra Phillips in Huron, and shortly after that they bought the present farm. He milked cows for 20-years; Dakota Pork for 10-years; and Pearl View Seeds for 10 years. He retired in 2003. Following his retirement he worked part time for Coburn's Grocery; and the Huron Country Club.

In 1947, when Jerry was 11-years old, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, during Vacation Bible School, at Hutterthal Church, rural Carpenter. Following his discharge from the U.S. Army he joined Mt. Olivet Church and was baptized there. He was a church usher and a member of the cemetery committee.

He enjoyed attending all of the school activities of his grandchildren, wood-working, and tearing apart old machinery.

He is survived by 1 son, Jeff (Teresa) Decker of Huron; 2 daughters, Lisa (David) Balster of Huron, and Denise (Darrel) Rennich of Bruce, SD; 7 grandchildren, Tyson Decker, Tierra Decker, Dylan Balster, Devyn Balster, Brittany Rennich, Ashley Rennich, and Bethany Rennich; 1 sister, Vivian Holcomb of Denver, CO; and 1 brother-in-law, Ray Jenner of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myra on June 11, 2010; an infant daughter, Tonja Jean Decker in 1968; 1 sister, Nancy Jenner; and 1 brother-in-law, Foy Holcomb.
