World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on September 26, 1916 for his actions as a corporal in the 10th Battalion, The Royal Welch Fusiliers, British Army, on July 20, 1916 in the early stages of the Battle of Delville Wood, France, during World War I. Born in Tipton, Staffordshire, England, nothing is known of his early life. He joined the British Army following the Outbreak of World War I in July 1914 and was sent to the Western Front in France with The Royal Welch Fusiliers where he won the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was later promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. During World War II, he served in a civilian capacity. He died in Bournemouth, Dorset, England at the age of 86. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 20 July 1916 at Delville Wood, France, prior to an attack on the enemy, Corporal Davies and eight men became separated from the rest of the company. When the enemy delivered their second counterattack, the party was completely surrounded, but Corporal Davies got his men into a shell hole and by throwing bombs and opening rapid fire he succeeded in routing the attackers, and even followed and bayoneted them in their retreat." His other medals and awards include the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal (1914-20), the Victory Medal (1914-19, with Mentioned in Despatches oak leaf), the Defence Medal, the King George VI Coronation Medal (1937), the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal (1953), and the Russian Order of St. George (4th Class). His Victoria Cross and other medals are on display at the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum in Caernafron Castle, Gwynedd, Wales.
