Marilynn B. Bloyd departed this world on Nov. 23, 2011. She was born the only child of Alfred and Vergie Baldwin in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on July 6, 1922. The family moved to Kansas City shortly thereafter where she grew to adulthood. After attending the University of Missouri at Kansas City, she was employed by her father, who owned the oldest travel agency in the city.
On behalf of the travel agency, she accepted from the Cunard Lines an exploratory trip to the Hawaiian Islands on the ocean liner Loriene. While staying at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (also known as the Pink Palace), she was offered and accepted the position of running the travel desk. During this time, she traveled the islands and met many celebrities, including Esther Williams, who was there to star with Howard Keel in the movie titled "Pagan Love Song." Esther Williams was pregnant at that time and, since Marilynn was an experienced swimmer, having participated in synchronized swimming in Kansas City, and she resembled Esther Williams, she was asked to do - and did - all of the underwater swimming in the film.
Returning to Kansas City, she resumed her travel agent career. She became the vice president of the Kansas City Ad Club, where she met and became friends with Jacqueline Cochran, holder of many speed records in propeller and jet aircraft. Marilynn specialized in arranging travel for groups to destinations in Europe, the Caribbean and the U.S. She also accepted a trip from Braniff Airlines to most of the major cities in South America to help promote their business. After Harry Truman was nominated for president, she arranged a secret trip for him to escape the turmoil for a few days.
Finding the dreary winter weather in Kansas City too depressing, she moved to Scottsdale in 1962 and continued her career with the Westwind Travel Agency in Phoenix.
Marilyn retired from the travel business when she married A.J. Stephens, a prominent industrialist from Kansas City. They entertained frequently and traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe.
Following his death, she moved to Prescott and was active in the docents associated with the local museum. During a visit to her cousin in San Antonio, she met Dean M. Bloyd, an executive with a local oil company. Following a long-distance courtship, which included many roses and phone calls, they were married on Sept. 11, 1982. Her husband retired in 1985 and they moved to Scottsdale. Together they enjoyed many cruises and did extensive traveling in the U.S.
After they moved to Prescott in 2001, Marilynn's health deteriorated, which limited her activities. She left her pain and suffering and departed us quietly at the Marley House and went to her place in heaven, never to know pain again.
She is survived by her husband of 29 loving years, Dean.
Pursuant to her wishes, services will be at Messengers Funeral Home in Scottsdale 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011.
Internment will be at the East Resthaven Park Cemetery in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, her desire is for contributions to be made to the Good Samaritan Society or the Salvation Army.
Sunrise Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
