John Blue died in a Springhill, Nova Scotia mine on 20 January 1881. According to the Nova Scotia archives "Men in the Mines" database, he was "struck by a cage."

He married Mary Beaton in Murray Harbor, Prince Edward Island, in 1854, and according to the book "Springhill" by Bertha Isabel Scott, he was one of the "Settlers of the Seventies" of Springhill, Nova Scotia.

He had numerous children, including:
