LaVerne W. 'Vern' Hensen, 82, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove.

He was born August 28, 1921, in Bouton, Iowa to Detlaf and Louise (nee: Merriam) Hensen. His early life was spent in Bouton, Woodward, and Ogden, Iowa. On May 16, 1943, in Boone, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Naomi Smith. Following marriage, he resided in Des Moines, Iowa, Maywood, Ill., and Burlington since 1954. Vern had resided in Union Grove at the Wisconsin Veterans Home for the past 2-½ years.He received his education in Ogden, Iowa and also attended the Coast Guard Academy and the General Motors Institute. Vern served with the Coast Guard during World War II on the North Atlantic Patrol out of Atlantic City. He had been the Service Manager at YMCA Camp MacLean for 30 years before retiring in 1984. Vern was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and the Burlington Rotary Club, where he served as Secretary. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 183. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and darts in the years following his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi Hensen of Union Grove; sons, Steven (Wendy) Hensen of Durham, N.C., Michael (Pauli) Hensen of Palm City, Fla., and Bruce (Debra) Hensen of Boulder, Colo.; daughters, Cheryl (Douglas) Giffin of Kewaskam and Marilou Hensen of Burlington; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Sam Hensen, Douglas III and Todd Giffin, Anthony (Marlo) Hensen, Jessica (Brian) Hinkle, Stephanie, Sarah, and Jonathan Hensen, Nash, Callie, and Benjamin Hensen; great-grandchildren, Eric and Dustin Giffin and Zachery and Kaitlin Hinkle; sisters, Anita Larson of Des Moines, Iowa and Dorothy Johnson of Hemet, Calif.; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Lois McVicker.

Memorial services will be held at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home on Saturday, August 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Burlington Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. Memorials to the American Parkinson Disease Association or to YMCA Camp MacLean have been suggested.
