Noel M. Worthy To Celebrate 100th Birthday On Sunday

Numerous people celebrated birthdays in Corsicana Sunday but none had a cake with as many candles as Noel M. Worthy, who is experiencing his first illness of his lifetime that has put him to bed.

He celebrated his 100th birthday July 16 at his home, 311 West Seventh avenue, with the cake compliments of his doctor.

A native of Covington, Miss., Worthy had already retired from active farming operation in Ellis county when he and his late wife moved to Corsicana in 1934. The Worthys had six children, four sons and two daughters, but only two sons. J. T. Worthy of Corsicana and Everett N. Worthy of Bardwell, are still living.

Worthy became ill July 8 with kidney trouble and had been in Memorial Hospital since that time until Saturday, still alert for a man who Sunday turns the page on a Century, but whose eyesight has been dimmed by time to the extent that Everett says he probably did not realize he was in the hospital. Everett told a reporter that he and his brother, they are 62 and 63 respectively, expected to have "some trouble with him" if he figured out he was in a hospital because he doesn't like to be anyplace but his home, and has always been a healthy man.

Born July 16, 1861, in the early throes of the great Civil War that laid waste to a fiercely proud land, he has told his sons of remembering hearing the gunfire of that conflict as a lad of four, about the time the war ended in 1865. His father fought for the Confederacy and was one who came through it unscratched.

The family came to Texas in 1876 moving to Hedgeville in Southeast Texas when Worthy was a boy of 15. They lived there several years before moving to Avalon where he became a blacksmith in his early 20s, met and married the former Lizzie R. Manning, also a native Mississippian.

Mrs. Worthy died July 12, 1959, at the age of 92 at their family home. He was about 27 when they were married.
Of this union were born six children, Lela, John, J. T., Everett, Joe and Viola. Lela and Joe Worthy died in early childhood.

Worthy was a "smithy" the nine years he and his late wife lived in Avalon and in 1886 when they moved to Bardwell, he acquired a grocery store and ran it for the four years the family lived there. In 1900, at the age of 39, the centenarian moved his family to Byrd, a community about five miles south of Bardwell, where he bought a small farm and added additional acreage as he prospered until he had accumulated almost a thousand acres. The surviving sons still own and operate a part of the farm place which they bought from their father. As he advanced in years and became semi-retired, Worthy rented out more and more of his farm on thirds and fourths with tenants and he had been in retirement several years when he and the late Mrs. Worthy moved to Corsicana in 1934.

The patriarch of distant eras of the nation's colorful history has besides his two living sons, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson, John Worthy, believed now living in New York state.

Sharing his birthday cake with him Sunday will be his sons and daughters-in-law, but the grandchildren and great grandchildren are scattered so far in Texas, OK, CA, and other places it is unlikely they can come here for this milestone so few people reach in life.
