On Saturday, November 19, 2011, Phyllis Norene Memmott Ashman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend left us to join family members waiting for her in heaven. She lived to be 102 years old and was a resident of St. George. She was born in Scipio, Utah, June 10, 1909, the youngest of five children born to Thomas and Anne Ivie Memmott. She married Albert E. (Bert) Ashman in Fillmore, in 1927, later solemnized in the Manti Temple in 1933. They had moved to Scipio where three children were born and raised. In 1950, the family moved to Cedar City where Bert had entered a new business. Bert was a ‘downwinder' and died of cancer in 1968, leaving her to run the business for the next five years. She worked at the hospital in Cedar City until she served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Arkansas-Louisiana mission then moved to St. George, Utah to become a temple worker for the next 18 years. She remained active until her health began to fail and three years ago she entered the Kolob Care and Rehabilitation Center. There she was cared for, lovingly and with great care. She was a ‘downwinder', but survived breast cancer. She loved music, especially the Classic Country Western Band, playing the organ, traveling, reading, entertaining her children and grandchildren, and playing Rummy Cube with her close St. George friends, Rose, Marjorie and Estelle.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Dr. Preston Thompson, MD of St. George; sons, Dr. Charles Ashman, DDS (Zorayda) who live in Las Vegas and Dr. Nolan Ashman, PhD (Yvonne) of St. George; 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, stepmother, Pearl; her brother, Forrest; sisters, Hettie Robins (Con), Coquella McPherson (Roy) and Virginia Anderson (LaVar); daughter, Phyllis Ashman; two great-grandsons, Jeffrey and Brian Thompson, and most of her friends. And can now set aside the rumor that she had gone to the other place.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff, St. George, UT at 11:00 a.m. Viewing from 10:00 until funeral services. She will be buried next to her eternal mate, Bert in the Cedar City Cemetery later that afternoon.
She asked us to thank those who visited her at Kolob and to thank the caring people at Kolob and Zion's Way Hospice.
