Melissa French was born August 9, 1864 near Potomac, Vermilion County, Illinois. She was the 10th of 11 children born to George Washington French Jr. and Irene Adams French. Melissa French married James Wiley Marvel on March 3, 1885. They lived in a sod house on their farm between Giltner and Phillips. Their first child, Ig Ethel, was born Oct 16, 1886. Her name was pronounced eye-gee, just like the two letters of the alphabet. She was named for Melissa's parents, Irene and George French. Three years later, their second child, Dora Marie, was born. She was born in the sod house but they built the frame house soon afterwards. Their third child, James Algy, was born February 5, 1893. Her grandchildren fondly remembered that Melissa's family usually gathered at her house on Sunday afternoons. She always had big scalloped edged sugar cookies in her cookie jar for her grandchildren and angel food cake was often on the menu. Melissa Marvel died of a heart attach July 3, 1933 at the age of 69.
