Hugh Niland trained as a cooper in Dublin. He enlisted in the 2nd Bombay Regiment of European Infantry, Honourable East India Company in 1854 and served through to 1859. Returned to Dublin, married and had 1 child before travelling to Canada. Enlisted in the US Navy in November 1862 and served to December 1864 (2 enlistments of 1 year each). From March 1864 he served aboard the USS Proteus. Returned to Dublin in 1865. Died in December 1894 from throat and tongue cancer. His wife Ellen was awarded a pension of $8 per month from the US Navy until her death in January 1903.
