His parents emmigrated to Winnebago County, Illinois in 1846 and in the spring of 1852 came to Allamakee County, Iowa. He followed teaching and surveying until 1861, when he joined Co I of a volunteer regiment of Missouri volunteers. He mustered out in 1864.

He farmed in Allamakee for several years, and then came to Postville and engaged in the hardward business, first in the firm Prescott & Ingalls and later in the firm Prescott & Easton.

In 1877 he was appointed postmaster of Postville and served for eight years. In 1879 he discontinued his hardware business. After being postmaster, he engaged in the insurance business.

In 1909 he sold his Postville property and with with his wife went to Sheridan, Wyoming, to live with their daughter, Mrs. Sara Peret, spendiug a portion of the time in Spokane, Washington, with another daughter, Mrs. Belle Williams.
