Oldest S. L. Grocer, 82, Dies While Visiting Son on Coast
Andrew Jacobsen, 82, 025-1st ave., believed to have been Salt Lake City's oldest active grocer, died Saturday at 7 p.m. while visiting at the residence of a son in Sherman Oaks, Cal. Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage.
Until a week ago, when he went to California on vacation, Mr. Jacobsen had worked at his store, Gem Food Market, 702-3rd ave. He often noted that in 67 years in the grocery business he had never missed a day's work on account of illness.
Mr. Jacobsen had been actively engaged in the grocery business in Utah since 1883. He had owned the Gem market since 1909.
Born in Denmark, June 1, 1867, where he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he came to Utah in 1881.
He married Miriam Farmer in the Logan L D S temple March 23, 1892. Mrs. Jacobsen died Oct. 30, 1942.
Mr. Jacobsen was a member of the Utah Retail Grocers Assn. and of the high priests quorum, Twenty-seventh ward, Emigration stake.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Mrs. Ralph M. Aldous, Drew and Clifton Jacobsen, Salt Lake City; Mrs. R. John Cummings, San Francisco, and S. Clark Jacobsen, Sherman Oaks, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas E. Jacobsen and Joseph A. M. Jacobsen, Salt Lake City.
