Born in Augusta County on Aug. 17, 1929, she was the youngest child of 14; of the late Emmett D. and Grace Armstrong Bartley. She was also preceded in death by her 13 siblings.
She worked with VDOT for 19 years, as a secretary, prior to becoming a teacher's aide at Jackson-Via Elementary. She loved working with children and retired from the school with over 21 years of service. She was a member of Meadows Presbyterian Church. She had a passion for gardening and tending to her flowers.
Charlene is survived by her husband of 57 years, William J. Hurtt; a son, William J. Hurtt Jr. and Fran Perrotta of Charlottesville; a daughter, Rebecca H. Sacre and her husband, Montie of Charlottesville; and her grandson, John W. Sacre and his wife, Michelle of Charlottesville.
The family will receive friends on Sunday Nov, 27, 2011 evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held on Monday afternoon Nov. 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Riverview Cemetery.
