The 389th BG flies home alone over France. German fighters make repeated attacks and the group loses four aircraft.

Assigned target Ludwigshaven Oil Refinery, Germany. Hit by fighters, losing its position in the formation its cockpit on fire before going into a corkscrew spin. After some of the crew had baled out the a/c exploded and crashed between and Nancray-sur-Rimarde, 19 miles north-east of Orleans, France. A German Report confirms that they identified S/Sgt Balsam together with 6 unknown airmen in the Cemetery of Vrigny. Another Report lists Lt Mattson and T/Sgt Neilson and it is assumed they were two of these unknowns. This suggests that in addition to the five crew from this B-24, two other airmen were buried at this time.

Note:-P, N, E, RO and LWG were originally interred in Vrigny Cemetery at Mellin, Two were later returned to the US -Krueger to Washington and Sgt to New York.
