MURPHYSBORO -- James "Jim" Duane Mifflin, 44, passed away at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, in his home surrounded by his family, after a hard fight with cancer.

James was born Oct. 20, 1959, to D. Joe and Melba (Shemoney) Mifflin in Murphysboro.

He attended kindergarten through high school in Murphysboro, graduating in 1977. James participated in baseball and basketball in junior high and high school, and he was also part of the Zips.

He graduated from Murray State University with an associate's degree in criminal justice and also attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

He was affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

He served 14 years as a loss prevention supervisor with Wal-Mart, was self-employed with his trucking business and farmed his family farm. He was employed by Mike of Egizzii-Berry Excavating.

James is survived by his wife, Machelle (Lacey) Mifflin, four daughters, Meghan Marie, Morgan Michelle, Mikah Mackensey and Macie Mariah, and his parents, D. Joe and Melba Mifflin, all of Murphysboro; his paternal grandmother, Thelma Mifflin; two aunts; and one uncle.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John James Shemoney and Ruby Crawford of Chester; his paternal grandfather, Andrew Mifflin of Jacob; one uncle; and an infant brother in 1964.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services today, Jan. 17, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 17, 2004, in the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Gordon and Don Caraway, James' friend since childhood, officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery.

Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of the services.

Memorials may be made in care of Machelle Mifflin for the education of his children.
