Poet. Born Ambroise-Paul-Toussaint-Jules Valéry in Séte, France, he studied law at the University of Montpellier and left school to pursue a life as a poet. In Paris, he began to publish poems in avant-garde journals, plus studied mathematics, philosophy and language. It was at that time he wrote a book of essays titled "La Soirée avec M. Teste" (1896). His published poem books included "La Jeune Parque" (1917), "La Jeune Parque" (1920), Charmes" (1922) and "Variétés" (1924). In 1925, he was elected to the Académe Francaise and spent the remaining twenty years of his life on International lecture tours. He died at age 73 in Paris, France and was given a state funeral.
