Engebret Thoreson Eggen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tore Thoreson, was born in Tyldalen,
Norway, on the 19th day of January, 1883, and died in Litchville, North Dakota, on the 28th day of August, 1939.
Mr. Eggen came to the United States and to North Dakota on the 17th of May, 1903, and a year later went to work in an elevator in Hastings as a second man. Some time much later, after he had learned much about the grain business, he went to Englevale to take charge of an elevator and following that became manager of an elevator at Kathryn, where he continued to work in that capacity for eight years.
During his residence in Kathryn, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Mennis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Mennis, on July 7, 1911, and to this union six children were born.
Leaving Kathryn, the family moved to Wolf Point, Montana, where Mr. Eggen had taken a homestead claim. Dry years came to Montana almost immediately after the families arrival there and therefore the stay was of short duration. Mr. Eggen moved back to North Dakota with his family, secured a job as manager of an elevator in Litchville and this has been the family home ever since.
He was in the grain buying business here for fifteen years, most of that time for J. C. Miller, but quit a few years ago to enter the poultry and cream business, in which he was engaged when death came to him so tragically last week.
Surviving Mr. Eggen are his widow and six children, namely, Clarence, Cleightie, Eldred, and Wayne, all of Litchville, Gladys of West Fargo, and Tyler, of Hurdsfield. He is also survived by a brother living in Duluth, Minn., a sister residing in Norway, and two grandchildren. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.
With the Rev. O. O. Lovaas in charge, funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 and at the First Lutheran Church of Litchville at 2 o’clock last Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers were John Berg, A. P. Hanson, T. I. Strinden, John Jacobson, John Haarsager and George Olson, and interment was made in the Nordheim cemetery on the Sand Prairie.
Deceased was a kind and good husband and father and a helpful neighbor and friend. The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing family.
