He received his commission as a 2/LT in the United States Army upon graduation from North Georgia College. He began his military career at Fort Jackson, SC. His first overseas assignment was to a post in Iceland. LTC Meeks was then assigned to Fort Benning, GA, followed by Fort McPherson and East Tennessee State College in Johnson City, TN. His next tour was to the Panama Canal and in 1967, he served in Vietnam. LTC Meeks' last assignment was to Montgomery, Alabama where he retired from the U.S. Army. He then joined the Atlanta Public Schools in 1972 and taught Junior ROTC for 20 years.
LTC Meeks is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha W. Meeks of Alpharetta; daughters, Jeanne Moss of Marietta and Terri and Conrad Lauten of Marietta; son, Chip and Becky Meeks of Marietta; grandchildren, Natalie Lauten, Jacob Moss, Emily Lauten, Travis Meeks, Rachel Moss and Brody Meeks. Funeral services for LTC Meeks will be on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 11:30 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at Georgia National Cemetery on Monday, November 28 at 11:30 AM.
