Obituary for Colonel Clyde Harvey, Jr.
HARVEY - Col. Clyde Lawrence Harvey, Jr, age 92, passed away on December 7, 2009 in Albuquerque. He was born September 5, 1917 in Dallas, Texas, to Clyde L. Sr. and Mamie Cecilia (Meier) Harvey. Clyde graduated from Abilene High School in 1936, Hardin Junior College where he majored in Business Administration, and the Air Command and Staff School in Maxwell in 1948. In 1940 he joined the Army Air Core to train as a pilot. Heavily decorated during WW II, Clyde flew 75 combat missions over Australia and New Guinea and received a silver star for valor under fire by single handedly attacking a squadron on bombers escorted by 47 fighters on their way to bomb Darwin. He shot down the lead bomber. Decorations include the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Unit Citation, American Defense Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory medal with three bars, National Defense Service medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Operations Ribbon. Upon returning to the states in 1943, he served as a flight leader, assistant operations officer, flight commander, was assigned to the Pentagon as Chief of Plans Division, as Chief of Staff for Headquarters Iceland Air Defense Force. In 1962 Clyde served on Joint Chief of Staff for General Chiang Kai Shek, Taiwan. As a senior pilot, he flew the P-40, p-38, p-39, and flew one of the US's First jets, F-80, F-89, and F-84.1970 Clyde retired from the US Air Force after 30 years of service and resided in Tucson, AZ until 2006 when he joined family in Albuquerque, NM. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Harvey, sisters Joan Nebel of Va, Anne Barker of Abilene, Texas, his children, Clyde "Larry" Harvey and wife Karen, of Albuquerque, NM, and daughter Sandra Matthews of Phoenix, Az, three grandsons, Jason Harvey and wife Heather of Albuquerque, NM, Jonathan "Bart' Harvey and wife Tania of Rio Rancho, NM, and James L. Harvey and wife Jaimie of San Diego, Ca, as well as four great grand children Paige Harvey, Cole Harvey, Laci Harvey, and Emma Harvey. Clyde will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Shiners' Hospital / Wounded Warrior Project for disabled veterans. Clyde's care has been entrusted to:
