Married Sarah Eleanor Slate, born June 21, 1885, died July 16, 1958, daughter of Professor Frederick Slate and Ella H. De Wolfe. Professor Slate was Professor of Physics at University of California, Berkeley.

Ernst was a Captain in the U.S. Army during WWI and served at St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest. He worked full time managing his investments and specialized in railroads in which he was a director. When both he and Eleanor died a foundation they had founded continued to financially aid college students, found a day care center for working mother's and many other philanthropic gifts were given to charities.
