William H Newman, 77, 815 North Buckeye, died this morning, November 12, at the Allen County Hospital. Mr. Newman had been in declining health for a year.
Born here September 28, 1899, Mr. Newman was a lifelong resident of Iola. He was employed by the Walton Foundry until his retirement in 1964.
Mr. Newman was a member of Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church and the Golden Square Masonic Lodge No. 71 of Iola.
Survivors include two sons, Floyd and William Newman, both of Portland, Oregon; four daughters, Mrs Spencer (Helen L.) Ambler and Mrs. Vernon H. (Kathleen) Garner Jr., both of Iola, Mrs. Elliott (Rosie) Powers, Kinahasa, Zaire, Africa and Mrs. Vernon (Donna) Wright, Topeka. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Newman was preceded in death by a brother, Harry, and a sister, Rose Thomas.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Friskel-Kinser Mortuary. A memorial in Mrs. Newman's memory has been established with the Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
