Dr. Alfred M. Engle went home to be with the Lord, May 20, 2000 at the age
of 91. He was born in Konnerock, Virginia, July 19, 1908, to Fred G. and
Carrie Engle, the youngest of four children. He grew up in Butler,
Pennsylvania, and upon graduation from high school, he worked as a crane
operator at the Armco Steel Company. It was at this time he felt God was
calling him into the ministry. He received an AB degree in 1932 from
Wheaton College (Illinois), ordination in 1935, and a ThB degree in 1938
from Northern Baptist Seminary, Chicago, and an honorary doctorate in 1955
from the International Academy of Great Britain. His ministry spanned 48
years, 1932-1980, serving Baptist congregations in Chicago, Illinois;
Plainwell, and Lincoln Park (Detroit) Michigan; Mesa, Arizona; Ventura,
Anaheim, Upland, and Montclair, California. He served 16 years on the board
of directors of the Lockman Foundation, the organization that developed the
New American Standard Bible, and was one of the editors of the NASB commentary.

He studied electricity by correspondence, built crystal radio sets, and the
first electron tube radio in his boyhood town. He could repair almost
anything and loved woodworking. He hunted and fished in Michigan. The
Ventura pier was his first introduction to ocean fishing. He had an avid
interest in orchid growing, raising nearly 200 different varieties, many of
them prizewinners, in a climate-controlled greenhouse he built by himself.

Alfred Engle will long be remembered as a wise and loving parent and husband
who always put God first in this life. He was never too busy to take a
personal interest in the people he met. His visionary leadership and
Bible-centered sermons inspired congregations wherever he was led to serve.
Under his leadership (1956-63) in Ventura, the First Baptist Church voted to
build a new facility out on the "edge of town," in a walnut grove on Mills Road.

Alfred Engle was preceded in death by Ruth, his loving wife of 64 years. He
is survived by two sons: Fred Engle of Ventura, and Roger Engle of Anaheim;
one daughter: Lois Rosser of Garden Grove; six grandchildren: Sid and
Cynthia Engle of Ventura, Debbie (Engle) Hoffmann of Costa Mesa, Jennifer
Engle of Anaheim, Lori (Rosser) Eick of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and
Loren Rosser of Pollack Pines, California; and also three great grandchildren.

Cremation and burial will be in Ontario, California. A memorial service
will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, May 26, 2000, at Atherton Baptist Homes,
Alhambra, California. Memorial gifts may be made to Atherton Baptist Homes.
