Preston Brown Twigg of Mathews, widow of Wallace Brooks Twigg Sr., died Monday Dec. 29, 2008. She was born at "Shadyside" in Ware Neck on Jan. 14, 1916, during a snow storm.
She was predeceased by her harents, Samuel Jefferson and Frances Coleman Robins Brown; her three sisters, Lelia Brown Jarvis, Roberta Brown King and Jean Brown Weaver; her niece, Margaret Jarvis Phipps, and her nephew, John Pegram Weaver.
Mrs. Twigg graduated from Botetourt High School in 1932 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Mary Washington College in 1936.
She taught at Manassas High School, Lee-Jackson High School and finally at Mathews High School for seven years during WWII period. After her marriage she became secretary/treasurer of Twigg Motor Company and retired in 1985.
She was an active member of Mathews Baptist Church since 1946 and served as church clerk along with other offices. She helped organize the Mathews Junior Woman's Club and served as its first president. She was a member of the Chesapeake Bay Circle of the King's Daughters and Sons, and an honorary member of the Mathews Senior Woman's Club and the Mathews American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 83. Mrs. Twigg was the first treasurer of the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
She is survived by her son, Wallace B. Twigg Jr. and his wife Nancy; daughter, Frances Lee Twigg Ellis; sister-in-law, Jane Twigg Miller; nephew, Charles E King Jr. and wife Betty; nieces, Jeannette W Payne and her husband Tom, and Suzanne J Walsh; and her faithful friend, Virginia Ball, along with many other dear relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at 11 am Wednesday at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, conducted by the Rev. Edward Inabinet. Visitation was held Tuesday night at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews.
