U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1819, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1822 and commenced practice in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, 1831, 34-36). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until he resigned in 1846. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
