French President. Receiving degrees in law and philosophy, from the University of Caen Norway, in 1902, he practiced commercial law in Le Havre, France. Entering politics, he was elected as a district councilor in 1907 and served on the communal council of Le Havre as a member of the Republican group, (1908-19). During World War I, he served in the 129th Infantry Regiment, French Army. After the war, he was as Deputy for Seine-Inférieure, in 1923 and served as Under-secretary of State for the Interior, until 1930. He was a member of the Constituent National Assembly, (1944-46), Deputy for Seine-Inférieure, (1947-48) and served in the French Senate, (1948-53). In 1954, he was elected as the President of France, serving until 1959. After his term, he lived in retirement until his death at age 78.
