Roman Catholic Saint. Second son of Giberto II Borromeo, count of Arona and Margherita de Medici. When his uncle Angelo de Medici was elected Pope Pius IV in 1560 he was created cardinal and was named secretary of state. Four years later he became archbishop of Milan. He dedicated his life to reformating the church and became a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation. He was canonized in 1610 by Pope Paul V. Together with San Ambrogio he is patron saint of this church. His body was buried at Milan Cathedral. His heart was donated to this church by Cardinal Federico Borromeo sen in 1614.
