A native son of Marysville has been signally honored in his adopted community of Meadville, Pa. A $500 annual scholarship fund was established recently in honor of John D. Bainer. It is in recognition of his long service to the Merchants Bank and Trust Co., in Meadville and for his outstanding contribution to his community and the field of banking. Mr. Bainer is chairman of the bank's board of directors.

The John D. Bainer scholarship fund provides $500 for an annual award to a promising student from Western Crawford County who will need financial assistance in the freshman year to attend Allegheny College. The announcement, made at a dinner meeting of the bank's officers and directors of the Meadville Country Club on April 21, was in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Allegheny College and the 100th anniversary of Merchants Bank. The gift of $12500 to the college will be given in five annual installments.

Mr. Bainer, who gained his first banking experience in the Peoples Bank in Marysville, has been in Meadville since 1936. For many years he was associated with banking in Columbus and Cleveland.

Married to the former Otelia Fox, he and his wife were both born in Marysville and attended Marysville schools. A daughter, Mrs. William (Mary Josephine) DeArment, resides in Meadville. Their son, Joe, was killed in World War II.

In Cleveland he was secretary-manager of the Cleveland Clearing House Association and at one time had served on a presidential commission to the Philippines. He served as president of the Meadville bank from 1947 until 1960 when he was elected chairman of the board. During that period the bank's resources jumped from $2.6 million to $25 million.

He is a former president of the Meadville Chamber of Commerce, a former president of the Meadville Community Chest and was chairman of the selective service organization during World War II. He is active in the affairs of the First Presbyterian Church.

An editorial in a Meadville newspaper stated that Mr. Bainer "is a fine human being and it is appropriate that a fund in his honor be invested in other human beings."
Marysville Journal Tribune, 05 May 1965, p. 2, Marysville, Ohio.

Note: Although the above article states he was born in Marysville, Ohio, his WWII draft registration states he was born in Chicago, IL.
