U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1846, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and commenced to practice law in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1853, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was solicitor of the Raleigh district of the superior court. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel of the 47th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was attorney general of the State of North Carolina, (1865-66), practiced law and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress, serving (1871-73).
