U.S. Congressman. He attended the Mount Airy Male Academy and then engaged in agricultural pursuits, processing of tobacco and mercantile pursuits. He was a delegate to all Republican State conventions, (1872-96) and a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1876-78). In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, (1896-98). After leaving politics, he engaged in the manufacture of lumber, agricultural pursuits and raising stock, until his death at age 68.
