Joseph was born in Phalon Muenster, Westphalia, Germany and came to America in 1847, working in New York for half of that year. He came to New Vienna with Joe Plathe, a brother of Rev. Plathe who was pastor of St. Boniface. Joseph married Caroline Honkamp Duthmann June 28, 1849 at New Vienna. Caroline was married to Bernard Duthmann in 1846, one daughter Mary, born 10-23-1847 (Mrs. Frank Recker). Bernard died before her birth. Joseph & Caroline farmed SW of New Vienna, next to her parents, the Honkamps.
They had 13 children: Joseph died at age 19; Victor & Anna died as children; William of Dixon Settlement; Frances (Mrs. John Hageman) Frank of Templeton; Rev. C. B. Lechtenberg; Mathilda (Mrs. H. A. Lieb); Louis (Mrs. Fred Lieb) of Alton; Fred of Granville; Henry; & one child infancy.
