John H. Fortney was born in Johnson Township, Trumbull County Ohio, the son of Jacob and Esther (Halsted) Fortney. He married Meinerra Jane Chadwick in 1861 (no record found; John not listed on the July 1860 census with his parents, however Jane was listed with her parents on the July 1860 census) and had a daughter Roxy Ann in 1862.

Enlisted at Wauzeka Wisconsin; Company D, Wisconsin 31st Infantry Regiment on 20 Aug 1862.Served as PIO (Public Information Officer) for the unit. Promoted to Full Corporal. Mustered out on 20 Jun 1865.

A son, Edward Wells was born in 1866.

As the family story goes, there was a sick neighbor boy (prob. a Taft Child) who "wanted the taste of squirrel", and John went out hunting for one, shot up into a tree, and a branch came down and killed him. His mother Esther wrote a letter to her parents in Geauga Co. Ohio, that told of the event; the letter is in the family Halsted Bible; info. abstracted by Grace Winnagle of Trumbull Co. Ohio; (Bible location unknown).
