Luther Marlin Howard, born 4 Dec 1916 in Muldrow, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, was the third child of George Albert Howard (1880-1973) and Mary (Inzer) Howard (1885-1952). He had 5 brothers, Theodore, Melvin, Clemon, John, and Edgar, and one sister, Isabelle.

Luther registered for the WWII Draft on October 16 ,1940, in San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, California. His description was given as 5'7", 140 Lbs, red hair, blue eyes, with a ruddy complexion. His occupation was given as a being self employed as a public gardener.

On June 8, 1945, Luther enlisted as a Private in the US Army at Fort Lewis, Pierce County, Washington, listing his residence as Clark County, Washington. He was married, had a grammar school education, and his occupation was listed as a skilled welder and flame cutter.

A Wahington State Marriage Record shows that Luther M. Howard and Laura Righter were married on January 28, 1947, at Camas, Cowlitz County, Washington. Luther listed his residence as Clark County, Washington, and Laura listed her residence as Audrain County, Missouri.

The 1970 and 1971 Bakersfield, California, City Directory listed Luther M. and Laura R. Howard as living at 20 Morrison Street in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.

Luther died at the age of 60 on August 9, 1977 and his obituary was published in the Springfield Leader and Press (Springfield, Missouri) on Thursday, August 11, 1977, on Page 19. The obituary stated that Luther Marlin Howard was a retired welder and a WWII Veteran. He was survived by his wife, Laura, five daughters, five sons, six grandchildren, and two brothers. He was buried in Section 34, Site 450, in the Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri. [RS]
