U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in the Signal Corps, Union Army. After the war, he attended the law department of the University of Michigan, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Carey, Ohio. Moving to Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in 186 and was Mayor of that city, (1872-82). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 54.
