Death of Ex-Judge, Daniels
Expired Suddenly at His Home in Licking Creek Township Friday Evening. - Eventful career Closed.
Was A Former Co., Commissioner

Ex-Associate Judge James daniels died at his home in Licking Creek Twp., Friday evening last at 5 o'clock. On the afternoon of that day he complained of an annoying pain in his side, but thought by the application of an ointment and a few hours rest in bed he would soon be rid of the trouble. When his daughter Margaret went to look after his comfort at the supper hour imagine the surprise and shock she experienced to find him dead. He had passed away without a struggle, peacefully, quietly, for he lay as one in silent slumber.

Judge Daniels was born in Licking Creek Twp., then a portion of Bedford County, July 14, 1923, and was aged 77 years, 11 months and 7 days. He was a son of Benjamin and Magdalena Daniels and was twice married. On April 28, 1850, he was joined in wedlock to Sophia Falkenor, and to them were born eight children, as follows: Dennis, who has been in the west for thirty years, Elizabeth, who died in infancy; William, of Licking Creek; Mary A., deceased, who was the wife of William T. Mellott; Maria, wife of William Baumgardner, of this place; John, of Belfast; Angelina, wife of George B. Mellott, of Belfast, and George B., the present district attorney.

His second marriage was with Mrs. Emeline L. Garland, and to them were born three children Rache. E., wife of William M. Sixon, of Pittsburgh; Luella, wife of Palmer P. Mann, of McConnellsburg, and Miss Margaret, at home.

By the death of James Daniels, Fulton county has lost an honorable citizen and one in whom the people had great confidence and respect. He was a man of much integrity and thrift. He was never known to make a promise he could not fulfill.

He was elected county commissioner on the Democratic ticket in 1861. Twenty years later he was honored with a second term as commissioner. He filled this office each term with honor and credit to himself and to the complete satisfaction of the tax-payers.

In 1893 he was elected associate judge, and his conduct for the five years of the term was characterized by fidelity and honest and impartial actions.

Judge Daniels in his public dealings was courteous and obliging, but precise and firm, and in the home was a kind husband and father. There was no half-way point in his friendship, and his death will bring regret to many.

The funeral was held from his late residence on Sunday, the services being conducted by Rev. James Logue. Honored in life, the sympathy as expressed by the presence of so many at his last obsequies only served to show the esteem in which he was held by his fellow citizens.

James Daniels was the second son (of 3) of Benjamin Daniels (1792-1852) and his first wife Magdalene (Schull) Daniels (1800-1828). James's father Benjamin remarried (2nd) to Catherine Pittman in 1830 with whom he had 5 more children.
