George Abney Is Slain In Battle In France Nov. 1

Hero Of Many Battles And Charges Over the Top Falls in Fighting “Over There”--Another Gold Star on Rockford’s Service Flag

Somewhere in France a little heap of earth and a wooden cross marks the grave of Private George Abney jr., and another blue star of Rockford’s service flag turns to gold, for last evening Mr. and Mrs. George Abney, 203 Kilburn avenue, received official notice from the war department that their son had made the supreme sacrifice in the salvation of democracy. The young soldier was killed in action in France Nov. 1, 1918.

Coming as it does after the signing of the armistice, the news is a sad shock to the bereaved parents and other relatives here, for great plans for the home-coming of this intrepid fighter had been laid, and high hopes of his coming through the strife safely were entertained.
