US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Ohio's 18th district for part of one term from May 1884 until March 1885. He received his education at local common schools and attended Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College) in Washington, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1844 he studied law in the office of Ohio lawyer and politician Benjamin Stanton and established a law practice, eventually becoming the prosecuting attorney of Columbiana County in 1851 and 1853. In 1884 he successfully contested the election of William McKinley, Jr. and took his seat in May 1884. He ran for a second term later that year and lost. In March 1885 he was appointed judge of the court of common pleas by Ohio Governor George Hoadly to fill a vacancy and served one year. Afterwards, he continued his law practice until his death at the age of 67.
