Russell Newton Hodges, 80, of Norfolk, VA, passed away April 20, 2009, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.
A native of Vilas, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Bun and Effie Hodges. He retired from the United States Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer after 35 years of service and also retired from Navy Family Services. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and was President of the United Methodist Men of the church. He was on the Board of the A.B.N.B. Federal Credit Union. He continued to volunteer for the Navy Family Services after his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy H. Hodges, two sons, James R. Hodges and wife Patty and Robert N. Hodges and wife Lynn, all of Mocksville, NC; a sister, Reba H. Hodges, and a brother, Maston M. Hodges, both of Boone, NC; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Russell's life will be celebrated at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2709 Greendale Avenue, Norfolk, VA on Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jim Maddox and Rev. David Wade officiating. The family will greet friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mocksville, NC.
