He was the son of Henry Back and Susannah Maggard. He was born along the Poor Fork, in Harlan County, Kentucky. He married Frances Blair, on March 30, 1843.

Despite what was inscribed on a "memorial marker" that was put there around 1998, by members of "The Back-Bach Genealogical Society" (who published an incorrect genealogy of the family), he was NOT the grandson of Henry Back, who died in Virginia in 1808/1809, and who was married to Elizabeth Hoffman (daughter of John Hoffman and Maia Sabina Folg). Therefore, he was not the third Henry in the line, and so he was not "Henry III."

He was actually the grandson of Joseph Back, who died in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1819. And he was the son of Henry Back, who was a son of Joseph Back. Therefore, he was actually a "Jr.," not a "III."

He was actually Henry Back JR. (not Henry Back III).
