Newville leader dies

Leon Wagner was a man who made Newville go, according to one lifelong friend.

Wagner, 77, died early this morning at his home following a long bout with cancer.

Wagner was the retired owner of Wagner Chevrolet and was active in several community organizations including serving as president of the Newville Lions Club and the Newville Businessmen's Association.

Walter Fickes, president and owner of Fickes Silo, said he had known Wagner most of his life.

Wagner was a good businessman and excellent community-minded individual, he said. Wagner was "Mr. Newville" to many people, Fickes said.

"He will be greatly missed. He was a very congenial type. He was connected with practically every organization and quite active in most. He made most of them go. He was a tremendous individual," Fickes said.

A complete obituary is on Page A7.
