Clinton Weston Clark, age 94, lifelong resident of Clark County, died on November 11, 2011 in the Golden Living Center at Clark where he had resided for nearly the past year.
He was born on a farm in northeast Clark County, on February 19, 1917, near Crocker, SD, the son of Charles and Lucy (Scott) Clark. He was schooled through the eighth grade near Crocker. His father had hoped he would be raising a young rancher and grain farmer, but Clinton loved nature and the outdoors more, a son of the prairie who understood and answered the mysterious "Call of the Wild".
As soon as he was strong enough to press down the spring of a trap, he was trapping gophers and barn rats. Soon he was placing gophers, rabbits and other small animals in pens, attempting to make pets of them.
At the age of twelve, Clinton Clark, owned a pet skunk. While taking care of this little stripped kitty, he saw possibilities in the raising of furbearing animals in captivity. He captured live skunks, ignoring their powerful defensive odor and within a year, he was the proud owner of 29 skunks, thus the beginning of his career and adventure in the raising of wildlife and being the owner operator of the Silver Tip Fur Ranch near Crocker.
Through the years, he has raised in captivity nearly all kinds of North American furbearing animals. Clinton, through breeding, developed the Dakota Gold Fox. Over the years, he and Jennie took many trips to New York selling fur pelts.
Clinton was united in marriage to Jennie Burgers Mulder on January 17, 1973 in Larchwood, Ia. The two had met in Sioux Falls at a ballroom where they shared many times together on the dance floor.
Clinton was a private pilot, flying his own Cessna, landing on the hill near the ranch. He would fly to Sioux Falls to go dancing and after their marriage; they lived on the Silver Tip Ranch. The couple moved into a home in Clark a few years ago and has spent the past couple of years at the Fay Wookey Assisted Living Center at Clark.
Clinton was a self-taught man in so many aspects; whether it was raising the fur bearing animals to the music he so loved. Clinton learned to play many instruments including the accordion and harmonica, that being his favorite, always willing to share a song. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Clinton was a member of the Clark United Methodist Church, serving on many boards. A founding member of the Clark County Historical Society, being very instrumental in the building and maintenance of the facilities and also due to their generosity, he and his wife Jennie, have ensured the society for many years to come.
They also saw that the Sanford Clinic – Clark Medical Center would become a reality, purchasing the land and donating the funds for that to happen. He also had served on the township board and numerous fur farming boards. Clinton and Jennie will be long remembered for their love of Clark and were proud to support it in so many ways.
He loved to write letters to the editor and also wrote a couple of books, "The Private Lives of American Furbearers" and "From Challenges to Memories".
Grateful for having shared in his life is his "beautiful bride as he would say", Jennie of Clark, children, Roger (Dana) Mulder, Pat (Darrel) Bonnema all of Sioux Falls, Linda Schacht of Eugene, OR and Rick Mulder of Sioux Falls, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Harry (Ione) Clark, a niece Jane and a nephews Charles and David.
