U.S. Congressman. From age 12, he was raised on a farm near Springfield, Ohio, and initially worked in the railroad and dairy industries. In 1923 his legs were paralyzed in a farming accident and he was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Aleshire operated a gas station and a grocery store in Springfield before winning the election as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives; he represented Ohio's 7th District from January 3, 1937, to January 3, 1939. He was defeated for a second term in 1938 and afterward returned to Springfield, where he died at 40.
