Heinrich Christian Stein was born in Bueltum, Amt Bockenem, Kingdom of Hannover, Germany on 21 May 1825. There is evience that his parents were Johann Christian Stein and Johanna Maria Elisabeth Rath. He married his first wife, Johanne Katharine Lucia Maertens 18 November 1851, before coming to America. In Germany, he practiced the weaver's trade.
In 1854, at the age of 29, he came to America, arriving at the port of New Orleans. He remained there about 1 year, then came upriver to Missouri. In 1858 he was living in Commerce, Scott Co. MO, and in 1860 he was living in the city of Cape Girardeau.
Christian and Katharine had 6 children born in Missouri: Heinrich Fredrich Gustav ("Gustav H."), Heinrich Christian Friedrich ("Christian F."), Wilhelm ("William")who died in infancy, Louis, Friedrich ("Frederick"), and Anna Caroline Alvine ("Alvina" or "Caroline A.A."). They also had an infant daughter, Elisabeth, who died at sea on their way to America aboard the ship "Adonis."
Following Katharine's death in 1892, Christian moved to Gordonville, Cape Girardeau Co. MO. On 16 November 1905, at the age of 80, he married a widow, Catharine (Litzelfelner) Rahmoeller, and they lived together until her death in 1919. Christian lived his last years with his daughter and son-in-law, George Siemers, in Gordonville. On 14 February 1929, Christian died at the age of 103 years.
