CLARKE COUNTY TRIBUNE, FRIDAY JANUARY 25, 1963

Funeral services held Wednesday, 11 AM, Quitman First Baptist Church for Rev. Clifton Jerry Johnston, 68, Rev. N. F. Greer, pastor and Rev. Ed F. Grayson officiating. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Walters Funeral Home in charge; Rev. Johnston, as a young man, attended Clarke Memorial College and Mississippi College before beginning his profession as a Minister of the Gospel; held pastorates in a number of churches in Clarke County; as well as several churches in Newton and Lauderdale counties and two churches in Alabama until his health failed after suffering a heart attack in 1959. During this time, he also taught school at Mont Rose, Hopewell and Stonewall; member of Quitman First Baptist Church, Hamasa Temple and Terral Lodge #514; Survivors - wife, Mrs. Leila Martin Johnston; son, Jerry; his mother, Mrs. J. M. Johnston; all of Rt 1, Quitman; two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Griffin, Rt 1, Quitman, Mrs. G. E. Creach, Alice, TX; six brothers, VM, Conway, SC, WJ, Magee, MS, JR, Gulfport, Lamar, Meridian, EL, Sheffield, AL, Dr. George W, State College; a host of nieces and nephews; Pallbearers - Carl Martin, Herman Chellette, IN Riley, GF Dabbs, Jim Culpepper, GB Williams, TJ Nichols, Franklin Slay, honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.
