American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Scotland, he received the award on May 10, 1865 for his actions as a corporal with Company F, 17th Maine Volunteer Infantry, US Army, on April 6, 1865, at the Battle of Sailor's Creek, near Farmville, Virginia, during the final days of the American Civil War. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Capture of flag of 21st North Carolina."
