U.S. Senator. He attended Vanderbilt University, studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1883, and commenced practicing law in Laurens, South Carolina. Entering politics, he was Mayor of Laurens (1887 to 1891, 1895), plus engaged in banking and in various manufacturing enterprises. In 1918, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1925. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the commission to report on the use of the nitrate plant at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1925. He also resumed the practice of law and continued his former manufacturing enterprises until his death.
