Frontier Peace Officer. Bob Olinger was a deputy U.S. marshal and deputy sheriff of Lincoln County, NM under Sheriff Pat Garrett. On April 28, 1881, Olinger and Deputy Sheriff J.W. Bell were killed in the line of duty at the Lincoln County Courthouse by Billy the Kid, who was being held in custody awaiting hanging for the murder of Sheriff William Brady. The Kid escaped and was shot in July by Garrett at Fort Sumner, NM. The murders of Olinger and Bell have been dramatized in the various Hollywood treatments of Billy the Kid. Deputy Olinger is memorialized at Panel 13, W-3 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.
