DAVIS, Thomas Edward. Newspaper editor and journalist. Born in Bedford, Va., September 25, 1835. Son of Micajah Davis and Ellen Phillips. Went to the University of Virginia, graduated 1858. Civil War service, joined Twenty-first Virginia Cavalry as adjutant and major, later seved with other units but always in Virginia. Moved to Galveston, TX. Married in Galveston to Mary Evelyn Moore. In 1876 founded the Houston Telegram. Moved to New Orleans 1878,wrote editorials for New Orleans Times. In 1879 joined staff of Daily Picayune as a reporter. Some of his best articles dealt with the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition and led to his promotion as editorial writer. Davis then became editor-in-chief, an office he held for over twenty-five years. An adopted daughter, Mrs. Paul F. Jahncke (Mary Pearl Davis).
