J.J. VICK IS STRUCK BY L.& N. TRAIN
-------------
Watchman for J.O.Kirkpatrick& Sons
May Die -- Accident Occurs at
Railroad Bridge
-------------
J.J. Vick, watchman at the lumber plant of J.O.Kirkpatrick & Sons, at North First street and the Louisville &Nashville Railroad, was probably fatally injured Friday night by being struck by Passenger train No. 51. The accident occurred at the railroad bridge, East Nashville side. Vick was taken to Eve's Infirmary, where his injuries were found to consist of a bad wound on the head, accompanied by inflammation of the brain and many bruises.
About 8 o'clock Mr. Vick went to the little office located at the end of the bridge, his purpose being to set his watch by the office clock. The train, which was due at the Union Station at 8:10 o'clock, was coming along, but being on the other side of the office, Mr. Vick did not notice it. The station or office is set close to the track, and as Mr. Vick came around to enter the door he was struck by the train.
The man was tossed ten or twelve feet. The train was stopped and the injured man carried aboard, being taken to the Second-avenue crossing, where an ambulance from J.S. Combs & Co. met the train and conveyed him to Eve's Infirmary.
Dr. Paul F. Eve waited on the man and found that his skull was not fractured but that the wound on the head had caused inflammation of the brain. His condition, while not absolutely hopeless, was pronounced dangerous, with the chances somewhat against him.
Mr. Vick's place as watchman of the lumber plant was filled for the night by two District Telegraph Messengers, the company being equipped with the DstrictTelegraph burglar and fire alarm system.
