Spanish Royalty. Born the daughter of Lope, Count de Luna and Brianda de Got of Provence. She was betrothed in childhood, and married Martin, the second son of Pedro IV of Aragon, in 1372. They had only one son who survived childhood, the future Martin I of Sicily. In 1396, Juan I of Aragon died without heir, and his brother Martin was next in line to succeed, but was in Sicily at the time. Maria took the throne as his regent and held it until he arrived almost a year later. She was said to have carried on a correspondence with the Pope, and she was described as cleverer than her husband. She died suddenly at about 48 years of age.
