Fred Dick was a physician (internist) in Statesville, NC where he had a solo private practice from 1954 until his death in 1972.
He died at the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center after he developed complications following hip replacement surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He had a severe stroke and went into a coma and never recovered.

He had graduated from Duke University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, and he worked for DuPont Laboratories until he volunteered for service in the Navy during World War II. He served on a submarine in the Pacific until he was discharged after the war ended. At that point he returned to Duke University and obtained his M.D. degree there. He then went to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine. He also completed a fellowship in hematology before moving to Statesville to establish his private practice. He made house calls and was on call 24/7 for many years before finally sharing night call with another local physician.

He and his wife had four children, one girl and three boys.
