US Senator. A 1907 graduate of Boston University Law School, he entered the New Hampshire State Bar Association in 1908, and established a law practice in Concord New Hampshire that still is in existence in the present day. He served a term in the New Hampshire State Legislature in 1911, and became a leading figure in the New Hampshire Republican Party. Establishing himself as an well know trial lawyer and an expert in constitutional law, he was a delegate to the New Hampshire State Constitution Conventions held in 1918, 1930 and 1938, and served as President of the State Constitution Convention held in 1948. When New Hampshire Senator Charles William Tobey died in office in July 1953, Robert William Upton was appointed by New Hampshire Governor Hugh Gregg to fill the vacancy and serve the unexpired term. Assuming the office on August 14, 1953, he served until November 7, 1954. He unsuccessfully ran for the seat outright, losing the race to Senator Norris Cotton. He returned to his Concord law practice, and retired in 1970, having briefly served as United States Special Ambassador to Liberia in 1956. He passed away in Concord in 1972 at the age of eighty-eight.
